WI-AIMH to leave Children's Hospital and Health System

Wisconsin Alliance for Infant Mental Health will no longer be a program of Children’s Hospital and Health System effective July 1. WI-AIMH’s affiliation with the health system came into existence because the services the organization provided closely matched the mission of the health system. The original goal for affiliation was to allow WI-AIMH the resources and support necessary to establish themselves as a statewide organization and to eventually become self-sufficient. The affiliation helped the organization reach this goal.

“WI-AIMH has done a wonderful job of spreading its message and establishing itself a resource and a leader in infant mental health. They are now ready to support themselves,” said Jennifer Hammel, director, Child Abuse Prevention.

The services provided by WI-AIMH will remain the same and will continue to be offered to agencies throughout the state, including the health system.

University of Wisconsin-Extension Parenting Newsletters: A Resource to Promote Competent Parenting

submitted by Carol Ostergren and Dave Riley

University of Wisconsin-Extension produces and distributes three series of educational newsletters for parents: Preparing to Parent, Parenting the First Year, and Parenting the Second and Third Years. These newsletters are age-paced, which means that parents of a 24-month-old receive information on the physical, intellectual and social skills being developed by children this exact age, and learn ways to promote optimal child development. Parents receive the newsletters in a number of ways – through the mail, by hand (e.g., home visitation programs), or by electronic delivery (parents receive a monthly e-mail with a link to the newsletter). Parenting the First Year is already delivered to about one-third of all new parents in Wisconsin by their county Extension offices, in partnership with 90 hospitals and health departments and 80 Kiwanis Clubs. To view the newsletters, visit the Extension parenting website at: http://parenting.uwex.edu.

Evaluations of the newsletters show that parents find them highly useful, share them with their social network, and make positive changes in their beliefs and behaviors. In particular, parents in socioeconomic risk categories (low income, low education, single, teenage, socially isolated) report the greatest change. An evaluation of Parenting the First Year in Wisconsin, using a large field experiment (1100 parents), showed that parents who received the newsletter series for a year, compared to those who did not, had beliefs that were significantly less like those of child abusing parents; they also reported actually striking their babies significantly fewer times in the previous week. Moreover, parents who received the newsletters, and were socially isolated from other parents, provided a significantly more intellectually stimulating home environment for their child.

If you are interested in finding out more about the UW-Extension newsletters, please contact your local county Extension agent, or contact Carol Ostergren (costergr@wisc.edu) or Dave Riley (dariley@wisc.edu). Organizations that partner with UW-Extension to distribute the newsletters can customize the back page, adding their own contact information and logo, so the publication looks like it comes from their office.

If you are a Wisconsin-licensed clinician currently working with young children and their families, we invite you to participate.

Go to the WI-AIMH Web site to download an explanatory letter and the provider data form: http://www.wiaimh.org/resources/imhproviders.htm.
